In a prior life Zayne is a divine figure looking down on the mortal world. The first time he bonds with MC across timelines, an icy thorn pierces his palm; her body shatters in his arms; her blood crystallises into amber. From that point his dreams turn dark — every dawn feels like a sentence. In the next sequence, MC's wounds heal but his do not. He keeps the wound open as a self-imposed punishment. Their fingertips almost touch but he refuses to cross the line. He holds, but does not use, the 'key to reversing life and death.' Black crystals begin climbing the veins of his heart.
