World Underneath chapter 3, 'Bouquets and Dirges,' runs two parallel events: a wedding and a funeral. Talia — Rafayel's aunt, world-famous Lemurian soprano — marries her fashion-designer husband in a garden owned by Charles (a jeweller-gardener and presumably another Lemurian survivor). Other Lemurian survivors attend, offering a glimpse of the wider survivor community. On the funeral side: the Lemurian skeleton displayed in Raymond's art collection is identified as the daughter of a Lemurian relative. Rafayel and Talia attend Raymond's funeral to pay respects to her — not to Raymond. At the funeral Raymond's mother publicly accuses Rafayel of Raymond's murder. Back at the wedding, Talia gives Rafayel a flower from her bouquet. She tells him that every Lemurian survivor is looking for an 'anchor' — someone to make existence bearable — and that he hasn't realised how desperately he needs one himself. She means him to find it in the person he loves.
