A child MC discovers him and saves him. She promises she will come back to that spot. He returns to it every year, waiting. She never appears. It is only later — in his Bond story 'Nightly Stroll' — that he learns the reason: she had a fever shortly after their meeting that completely erased the memory. From her side, the meeting never happened. From his side, she chose to abandon him. This unspoken wound is the substrate for his bratty, possessive present-day surface.
